A digital edition is an online magazine presented in a such a way that it looks just like a print magazine but often with the addition of interactive elements such as videos and moving adverts. Current technologies fall into two categories: Reader-based or Browser-based. The former requires the download of an application and subsequent download of digital edition titles. The latter requires no download and is normally Flash-based.

History

A PDF presents documents digitally in a fixed layout format[1]. Early digital magazines were just this and were direct copies of offline magazines that were available digitally.[2]

In 2008, digital magazines now present the same fixed layout format but many with the addition of page turning technology, which visualises the page turning over like it would with a physical magazine, and any flash technology that is relevant e.g. animations, video, forms and links.[3][4][5]

Some non web based digital magazine products also offer the additional benefits of search and bookmarking functionalities and the ability to save and store a catalogue of magazines to a computer's hard drive. A document reader software download is usually required to manage the downloading, storage and reading of these digital editions.

Digital editions are also known as digital magazines, ezines, e-editions and emags.
