The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional body for architects in Australia. Prior to August 2008, its name was the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

The institute consists of 9000 members across Australia and overseas. It was formed in 1930, when state architectural institutes combined to form a unified national association. A chapter is maintained in each state. The AIA is represented on many national and state industry and government bodies, and is affiliated with the International Union of Architects (UIA).

Awards

Since 1981 the AIA has presented national awards. In 2006 the national award catergories were:

  • The 25 Year Award
  • The RAIA Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Buildings
  • The RAIA Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings
  • The RAIA Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage
  • The RAIA National Award for Commercial Buildings
  • The RAIA National Award for Interior Architecture
  • The RAIA Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design
  • The RAIA National Award for Sustainable Architecture
  • RAIA National Jury Award (Multi-Residential Buildings)
  • Bluescope Colorbond Steel Award
